.:°Faramir of Gondor°:.

He was born as the second son of Denethor II, 26th Ruling Steward of Gondor, and Finduilas, daughter of the Prince Adrahil of Dol Amroth, in the year 2983 of the third age, younger brother of five years to Boromir.

While Boromir loved his brother dearly and became his helper and protector, their father Denethor always favoured his eldest son for Boromir was proud, valiant and renowned as a warrior while Faramir, resembling Boromir in looks, grew up to be thoughtful and kind, taking interest rather in lore and music than in battle.

In the appendices of ROTK it says:

'Faramir the younger was like him in looks but otherwise in mind. He read the hearts of men as shrewdly as his father, but what he read moved him sooner to pity than to scorn. He was gentle in bearing, and a lover of lore and of music, and therefore by many in those days his courage was judged less than his brother's. But it was not so, except that he did not seek glory in danger without a purpose. He welcomed Gandalf at such times as he came to the City, and he learned what he could from his wisdom; and in this as in many other matters he displeased his father. 'Yet between the brothers there was great love, and had been since childhood, when Boromir was the helper and protector of Faramir. No jealousy or rivalry had arisen between them since, for their father's favour or for the praise of men. It did not seem possible to Faramir that any one in Gondor could rival Boromir, heir of Denethor, Captain of the White Tower; and of like mind was Boromir.'

So strong was the bond between the two brothers that Faramir heard the call of Boromir's horn in Minas Tirith shortly before his brother was slain beneath Amon Hen and at night saw his funeral boat float seawards on the waters of Anduin.

'It waded deep, as if it were heavily burdened, and it seemed to me as it passed under my gaze that it was almost filled with clear water, from which came the light; and lapped in the water a warrior lay asleep. A broken sword was on his knee. I saw many wounds on him. It was Boromir, my brother, dead. I knew his gear, his sword, his beloved face. One thing only I missed: his horn. One thing only I knew not: a fair belt, as it were of linked golden leaves, about his waist. Boromir! I cried. Where is thy horn? Whither goest thou? O Boromir! But he was gone. The boat turned into the stream and passed glimmering on into the night. Dreamlike it was, and yet no dream, for there was no waking. And I do not doubt that he is dead and has passed down the River to the Sea.'

On the 1st of March of the year 3019 of the third age Faramir left Minas Tirith on an errand to Ithilien where on the 7th of the same month he met Frodo and Sam and took them on a secret path to Henneth Annûn. Upon his return to Minas Tirith he was immediately sent to Osgiliath by his father Denethor leaving the White City on the 11th of March. On his retreat from Osgiliath to Minas Tirith he was wounded and taken to his father. Denethor who had looked into the Palantir and had seen Gondor's doom approach then tried to burn both him and his son on a pyre but while his father perished Faramir was rescued by Pippin, Gandalf and his loyal guard Beregond.

After the Battle of Pelennor Fields he was cured by Aragorn in the Houses of Healing. There he met Éowyn, White Lady of Rohan and sister to Éomer, then after Théoden's death King of Rohan, and fell in love with her. After the War of the Ring her heart that had long been with Aragorn turned to Faramir and so the last Ruling Steward of Gondor married the White Lady of Rohan.

'And would you have your proud folk say of you: 'There goes a lord who tamed a wild shieldmaiden of the North! Was there no woman of the race of Númenor to choose?'' 'I would,' said Faramir. And he took her in his arms and kissed her under the sunlit sky, and he cared not that they stood high upon the walls in the sight of many. And many indeed saw them and the light that shone about them as they came down from the walls and went hand in hand to the Houses of Healing.

After his crowning King Aragorn Elessar made Faramir Lord of Emyn Arnen and Prince of Ithilien and he went with his wife to dwell in the beautiful lands by the River Anduin. There Éowyn bore him a son, Elboron, heir of Ithilien.

Faramir, son of Denethor and Finduilas, brother of Boromir, husband of Éowyn and father of Elboron died in the year 3103 of the fourth age. He was then 120 years old.
